A new adventure

Gherkin's Bucket

Oh lord. Like I needed something else to take up time.

This is all Gherkin’s fault. You see, she put this handspun up on her Etsy shop, and I couldn’t really resist it. I had to have it.

Gherkin's Bucket

You understand, right? So anyway, I buy this, and start petting it, and I’m like “hey, maybe I could do this kind of thing too.”

Sigh.

When I had that “brilliant” thought, I didn’t own any sort of spinning apparatus. Technically, I still don’t, but I did borrow a drop spindle and some sample fiber from my friend Jen. I’ve tried spinning a bit and there have been mixed (and unphotographed) results. I think I understand the main principles behind the practice, but as with everything, it’s taking a while to get the theory and the application jiving together. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I’ll have some handspun by me yarn to show you all.

Of course, I’m sort of impatient, so I may just beg and plead some of my pals with spinning wheels to let me use those.

    • Thanks! I watched some YouTube videos last night and it started to make a bit more sense to me. But of course, I haven’t had a chance to really try since then. 🙂

  1. If it helps, I never got the hang of doing the drop spindle.

And when I moved to a “real” wheel as it was, if I hadn’t needed to move and give the wheel a good home, I actually would have gotten darn good at it.

So I wish you luck, and it’s almost making me want to pick up the drop spindle I see poking out of a basket upstairs…

    Good luck!

    • Thanks for the encouragement! I’m going to give it some more time over the weekend. Hopefully sometime next week I’ll have results to show for it. 😀
